Photographer’s lighting bag

October 1st, 2009 msoo No comments

A bag that I recommend if you are photographing using portable lights, a light stand, battery pack, reflectors and a few other loose equipments. It’s a light stand holder, a carry-on lugguage, a battery pack holder, lightstand strap, a sandbag and much much more. No, not affiliated with them but they are quite amazing.

This is a specialized bag that they put together for me. If you want one, call Susan at Tutto and tell them that Michael Soo sent you.

Commercial Photography Project with Models

June 16th, 2007 msoo No comments

Commercial and Advertising Photoshoots projects with models is my favourite photography work.

Jupiter Hosting Team I really enjoy organizing the whole package. From contacting models, working with the client, to pulling the whole project together. This isn’t easy especially if the client is on a budget and the models are freelancers. The reason is because they tend to either lack experience, can’t pose or are not as professional. However, once in a while, you do get some models who are good.

Ashton I’ve shot Ashton (shown here on the right) a few times before and she is very professional, beautiful and poses well. Here, she is backlighted with a blue-green gel that enhances the imagery with a beautiful aura of “intelligence” if you will.

Ashton Lighting is very important. When the space for the shoot is large, the lights will need to be ultra powerful. You’ll need at least a 1200 True Ws lights, preferably, something even more powerful, such as a 2400 True Ws lights. This is due to the inverse square law for light where the light falloff is rapid. If you are using medium or large format, your light usage will be even worse. Just be sure not to break the circuits too often. ;-)

On top of that, your lighting pack needs to be flexible enough to go into low power without changing its light temperature as much. I know for a fact (Yep, I personally tested them) that just about all monoblocks lights have a horrible shift of color temperature (300 to over 1,000 Kelvins) between max and min power. You probably don’t care about such shifts if you are doing casual fun photography but it can be incredibly frustrating if you care a lot about the colors, for fashion or product photography. Imagine shooting a white product on white background and you see a yellow-orange tint on one side of the product and bluish cast on the other. Yuck!

Ashton Back to the point, lower power is needed to enable shots such as those on the left where the screen of the monitor’s glow is important to be captured while you still want some lights to illuminate the background and fill the shadows.

Couture Bridal Photoshoot at Jinza Jin with my Profoto 600R

April 26th, 2007 msoo 1 comment

Fleeting Moment The most fun in any photoshoot is when you get to collaborate with the best talents the industry has to offer. Here, in this shoot, we have:

  1. two absolutely stunning models, Charisse and Milena
  2. our gracious host, Jinza Jin who owns the amazing couture bridal line at 2040 Union Street in San Francisco
  3. our lovely Janice Daoud whom I can’t have enough praise of
  4. the most talented hair stylist, Mikel with a fantastic personality!
  5. Of course, our Paul Ferradas who is always there to help

Charisse Profoto Acute-B 600R What’s this shoot for? How about for all our portfolios? Is that a good enough reason? WE ALL THINK SO!.

While I am at it, I got the chance to try out my new toy, the latest little photo gear from Profoto. The tiny little, Profoto Acute-B 600R battery and of course, its equivalent Profoto Acute-B 600 w/s lamp head. I’m not even counting the modifiers and this tiny light bulb made me bleed $3k. Ouch! And I’m actually thinking of buying 3 more
sets of these? Hahaha. Michael Soo’s lofty goals.

Credit Card Bill for April 2007 Talk about finances, I’m leaking … gushing money this month. My credit card bill came yesterday and even though I expected it, I still fainted for a few minutes before I ran and played with the lights again. I think I need help. Know a good therapist, anyone?

This is probably one of the main reason why a photographer charges a few pennies extra for their services.

On the bright side, this little sucker is an amazing pack. Possibly the lightest gear available in the market! 10 measly pounds!!! I could see myself pocketing the long term medical savings when I turn 70! That’s where the savings will roll in by the millions!!! Oh yeah!

Milena I really enjoy commercial, high fashion couture shoots for a few damn good reasons. I can’t do the statistical type of shoot where I take 1000 shots, hoping for 1 great shot. I’m the type of guy who wants to take 10 shots, expecting 5 phenomenal shots! That made me really suitting for commercial since most companies only want 1 to 10 great shots and use it for anything from advertising, packaging to websites, etc.

I think we got enough out from this shoot to last us a while. Then again, we’re doing a beauty shoot the day after tomorrow. I guess I just can’t sit around long enough without fidgeting. ;)

Model Photography Workshop

March 7th, 2007 msoo 2 comments

SealedI’ll help hold your reflector” is what a fellow photographer will nudge into my ribs when they see my modeling portfolio work. They are interested to work with gorgeous models but has nothing in his portfolio…yet.

It’s a catch-22. You can’t attract a 8/10 model to work with you if you don’t have images of other 8/10 models in your portfolio and you can’t have a portfolio full of 8/10 models if you never work with a 8/10 model!

EminateSo, how do you go from point A (zero portfolio, zero interest) to point B (beautiful models calling you to have you shoot them, and PAY YOU $550 while you’re having your fun)?!?!

I suppose everything comes at a price. You can of course start by investing a lot of time working with the 5/10 models. It will take you some time and if you’re lucky and have the charming personality of car salesman, you may coerce a 8/10 to work with you.

The alternative, is to find a good model photography workshop that you can get get some immediate air time with great models in a nice friendly location. They’ll even sign your model release form while rubbing shoulders with you, handing off more of their friends to you.

While you are at it, you do also get to learn about lighting, how to work with models, communications, workflow, tips and tricks that you can’t learn anywhere else.

Tire Swing It’s no secret that I’m trying to put workshops together and one may think this is a shameless plug.

The truth is, this really isn’t my main line of work where I’ll make my millions. I love teaching, I love sharing and I love shooting models. And if I can get paid while doing what I’m passionate about, I’ll be in heaven.

Workshop info provided here, http://www.soophotography.com/workshop/

These shots are done at Libby’s dad’s 300+ acre ranch in the east bay, a location that I’m contemplating on doing the model shoot workshop. There are full of wonderful spots, props and rustic background that will fill your portfolio to the brime with amazing landscape (location work) and model work in one.

On top of that, it’s private and is only a mere 1.5 hrs away from most bay area cities.

When is the model photography workshop? It’s still undecided. I’ll let it swirl in my head a bit longer. Email me if you are interested. msoo (at) soophotography (dot) com

Of course, here is a thread to the SooCool Forum with all the images from that day.

Eat, Drink, Video and a Studio shoot

February 3rd, 2007 msoo No comments

Brittany's Fire Dance What better things to do than to have friends over (who bring beers and wines), edit some videos, have a great meal, have a couple of beers, some Chardonnay and a photoshoot? Good times! Ok, my idea of fun can be different than the average Joe and that’s that. ;)

So Jen & Paul came by to edit Jen’s video to showcase her experience as a news
broadcaster. Jen, being a real sweetheart, brought not one, not two but TWENTY-FOUR bottles of beer and a bottle of chardonnay. I’m not sure where she got the idea that I edit video much more artistically while intoxicated. Brittany came over at 6pm. You don’t know who Brittany is? Shame on you, go back into my past blog and read the Angel’s Descent. Yes, you. You with the big nose! Go read it NOW and don’t come back till you show this young lady some freaking respect.

iPod Dance Breathe! Breathe! Anyways, we finished the video editing. Damn fast job too. I managed to trick Jenny into thinking that it was extremely difficult and will take 20 engineers and 20 hours to edit, but with my spanking NEW Apple iMac, that typical 20 hour task shrunk down to a mere 2 hours using only half a brain (the other half is intoxicated, remember?). Anyways, went to BJ’s for dinner, came back, and NOW, the fun begins. Rolled out the seamless gray and setup the lights, ready, set, SHOOT, SHOOT, FLASH, POSE, POSE, SHOOT, DRINK, DRINK, BURP, SHOOT AGAIN.

I have not had so much fun in a long long time. The absolute best shot of the night? Without a doubt, that prize winning photography goes to Paul who captured this winning image. I think I’m going to submit this image to some contest. I bet I’ll win lots of money.

Airborne Gymnastics

December 27th, 2006 msoo No comments

Airborne Frances’ youngest princess, Michelle is possibly one of the most elegant Level 9 gymnast that I will get a chance to see in person. Frances is my ex-manager in Sun Microsystems, Inc. I have shot Michelle during gymnastic practise before but in horrible lighting conditions. This time round, it will be different. ;) I have always wanted to shoot gymnasts and ballet dancers. My previous foiled attempt in shooting Charisse and Krystal due to time constraints was a big, big disappointment for me. So, this is a compensatory shoot to satisfy my inner artistic desire, if you will.

I brought a truckload (literary) of gear for this shoot. It’s a heckavu lot of gear to bring for a TFP shoot. But it’s worth it! Oh yeah, it is. The immense amount of setup in a large space require a bit more gear, I suppose…and my concepts demands it as well. It’s a treat for me since this photoshoot is done in the Airborne gymnasium. Space is completely not an issue (for once…wow!). I could use a barbie sized backdrop with a 500mm lens if I need to and it’ll be OK! Well, except I don’t have a 500mm lens. :-(

Airborne Sarah, Michelle’s friend join us for the shoot as well and she is like a rubber band, twisting like a pretzel with ease. All that in mid-air. Quite fun to watch if you ask me. I started with a standard lighting setup using a softbox, a rim light and background light. Did a few shots and then I advanced into the photography artistic hyperdrive and did something that is usually frown upon in photography, which is to use a small light source for people. Hah, I’m a naughty boy. What can I say? In doing that created imagery that WOWed even myself. I had Sarah do a Sheep Jump to the height where the light hits her to created The Shadow of the Sheep. Yeow!

I have to say it was a really amazing experience. Michelle and Sarah, who supposedly never model in their lives would create stunning poses one after the other with very little directions from me. Most, if not all, of their poses would lay shame to even the most experienced models. They embody the very word, Airborne itself. Moi? I’m just the button clicker. But heck, these images aren’t even the best in the series. You’ll have to check out the whole shebang in the gallery. I especially love the Götzen-Dämmerung, Twilight of Idols, The Archangel’s Requiem and you should NEVER miss The Stasis, which I think is the best of the entire shoot.

Without further adue, presenting the Airborne Gymnastics Gallery.

I suppose an explaination of the titles for the images is in order.

  • Shadow of the Sheep – that is the “Sheep Jump” (don’t ask me, I didn’t give that jump the name).
  • Götzen-Dämmerung is a book is a book by Friedrich Nietzsche, which translates to the “Twilight of Idols”. The background represents the sunrise and the idol…
  • Archangel’s Requiem or The Archangel’s Lament, if you will. The archangel is standing between the good and evil (the divide between the white and black) and is deciding which way to go.
  • Telos is derived from the Greek word, which means “the End of the process” or in this case, the end of the dance or dilemma.
  • Woglinde, pronounced wo-glin-day, means “gentle evenness or balance”.
  • Stasis is a form of equilibrium, which depicts this image.

    Sweet Surrender

November 19th, 2006 msoo No comments

Trans American Girl Her cold stare pierced through the frigid wind. Mild condensed air from her lungs released briefly into the darkness as she stood atop the rooftop, draped in absolutely nothing but a flimsy but fashionable couture black dress, showing her bare back. Soft light carressed every contour of her smooth silky skin. Her black stiletto scratches the ground as she stood, turning her head. She shivered and steadied her pose, warmth from her body slowly drained by the wind. There stood Charisse, conquering nature with her elegance and beauty.

This was supposed to be a ballet-on-the-rooftop shoot to begin but with fog rolling into the city, causing flat lighting, the severe cold and lack of time caused the whole shoot to be drastically change. The photographer’s (ahem!) brain went into hyperdrive, simulating scenarios and creating last minute (more like last second) improvisations to rectify this extremely difficult shooting condition, somewhat reminded him of his extremely difficult photography challenge he faced over a year ago in New York. The same scenario, given to another, can cause a serious panic-attack and extreme nausea. Adding insult to injury, he had to carry over 100lbs of gear up small doorways, elevators, stairs and locked rooftop doors AND wiring 50 feet of cables for the lights. It was an interesting experience, to say the least.

Dressed in Layers Charisse quickly then swap places quickly with Krystal, scurrying into the deep layers of coats, blankets and jackets that lies on the ground. She’s now happy and warm. That’s a good thing! ;-) After a few more shots, everyone adjourned to Susanne’s apartment. Thanks to Susanne, our fantastic host who helped secured the rooftop for this shoot is an extremely bright and charming woman and also the CEO of Point Arcadia. Both Laura (Susanne’s sister who also lives in the same building) and Susanne has got to be two of the sweetest people I’ve gotten the pleasure to know. She was more than accommodating. Hot tea was served throughout the entire shoot. What a sweetheart!

Charisse Warming Up Sweet Surrender As you can tell here, Charisse is all happy within the warm confines of the apartment. LOL. We were all tired at the time, so we did a few more snaps before we ended the session. It was fun but also a lot of work to put that together. However, the results are freaking outstanding.

    Modeling Portfolio

November 11th, 2006 msoo No comments

Paul and I decided to do a 2nd mega photoshoot, this time with 4 models, 3 photographers (Paul, myself and a guest photographer) and 1 videographer (Bryan Chang). We were graced by the presence of 4 models from across the bay, Nicole, Celeste, Melina and Angelina. Each bring a very different and unique set of talents into the shoot. It’s really amazing because most Art Directors will think of a particular concepts and there will only be ONE model out of hundreds that can fit that role. Same case in this shoot as I have concepts rolled up in my head weeks before the shoot. Along with the concepts, ideas on who can fit the roles has already been stamped and cleared. In effect, I was the Art Director, the Photographer and at some point, a really bad stylist and awful make-up artist, all rolled into one. For a larger shoot, this will not be ideal, obviously. Wearing multiple hats will help ensure that I can jump into a role when the need arises.

One of my objective of this shoot is to help “pave a pathway”, if you will, for these new models-to-be, into the world of commercial modeling. I’m hoping to help create a starting point with at least 1 out of 5 shots that they can use for their comp card, should they choose to do so. The other part of this shoot, done most gracefully by Paul are glamour shots for the girls. Paul has a style in photography that few has managed to achieve, much less, duplicate. It is no secret that many photographers tried to have him divulge his techniques. However, it’s my belief that if it isn’t their style to begin with, it will never be their style to end with. Paul, if you’re reading this, you can share your techniques with me. I’ll keep it a secret. ;-)

Genie We also had Bryan videotape an hour worth of fun. The video footage is amazingly well done (thanks to Paul and…me, haha!) and if you have not watched it, it can be found in youtube as well as MySpace. Do NOT miss it. It’s good clean fun and if Nicole can have her way, she’ll dance her way through the entire shoot. ;-)

Nicole on the right was fooling around when I shot this. What she does not realize, most of the time is that she has the innate ability to extend her character across the room when she is relaxed. That’s her personality and her great selling point in a portfolio. Nicole rocks. I keep telling her that and it may diluted the effects. Bah, who cares. Nicole Rocks!

I do have to admit that the best shot that I did that day is actually a ultra hot glamour shot for Celeste. If you want to see that image, you’ll have to talk to Celeste. ;-) But let’s push glamour aside for a minute and talk about modeling portfolio. What do the commercial agencies really want? Modeling is really about acting and if you send them a comp card with 5 images of identical expression, it’ll get them uninterested really fast. You need to prove that you have the ability to be an actor(ess) in a different scene, different products and different use case.

Gucci Eau de Parfum I first took Celeste to the fireplace for my first session of the day. Celeste took a bit of time to warm up but when she did, she really glowed with her full ability to showcase herself. She is also a bit more seasoned as a model as she has done work with a few other photographers. I really wanted to showcase her “wild side” and she has the body to show off. We did my best glamour shot that day and right after, this shot on the left. Her hair flying sideways looked incredibly dynamic. In addition to that, Jorge’s wonderful makeup on her just spiced it up a big notch. The hardest makeups are the ones that you can’t tell there’s a makeup but makes the model look incredible at the same time. That’s a fact! Keep that in mind for your search for the best makeup artists out there. Jorge did a phenomenal job here. I also found the perfect crop for this hot image. Yup, I’m the Crop King!

Delirium Melina coyly admitted that she’s not the typical glamour girl. However, that’s not really an issue here. As I stated earlier, it’s really about personalities and how a model can fit into a role and, not the other way round. Her gorgeous blue eyes is the main attraction and rightfully so. I had Bryan and Ken hold her arms while she gave me an intense stare. What came out from it is perfectly slated for this mock ad, Delirium on the right.

Clinique Angelina has one of the most perfect skin and beautiful face one can lay eyes on. She’s a cutie. If there is a commercial for skin products, she is the perfect choice. She only had red lipsticks on at the time. Of course, I could just shoot her plain and she would look incredible. But to give it a unique twist, I had her hold two torn pieces of translum and got the shot on the left. The additional make-up was done by yours truly. ;-) As you can tell, I only smooth out skin when necessary and skin texture can be a great friend and gives an image a real feel to it.

For a model to jump into the modeling business, he/she needs to start with CRS (Critically High Standard). What does that mean? You need to be able to impressed the agent with just one glance. One look is all it takes for you to get in. You folks have it easier than actors. Actors sends in one headshot and that’s their one chance. Models have a comp card that shows 5 shots. You are as strong as your weakest link and it’s true. Your worse + worst image will be branded into the minds of Art Directors, agencies and photographers. This really is a First Impression business.
